About Us

Overview

The department focuses on training students who intend to qualify as educators to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) in various learning areas and subjects, and who will implement their methodological knowledge and skills of teaching at: Further Education and Training (FET) band in the B.ED-FET and PGCE programmes. The PGCE offers methodologies for Science subjects, Languages, Management Sciences and Life Orientation subjects.

The department also houses the Educational foundations modules which include: Philosophy of Education, Sociology of Education, Psychology of Education and History of Education at undergraduate levels for teacher trainees to cope with the needs of the community at large. This Department also upgrades qualifications of teachers through NPDE.

  5. Master of Education Teacher Education (MEdTE)

Bachelor of Education Further Education and Training (BEd FET)

Description
This is a comprehensive four year undergraduate degree. The degree prepares teachers who qualify to teach at both Senior Phases, and Further Education and Training (FET) band.

The degree carries 480 credits.

Duration
The BED FET is a four year degree programme on full time basis.

Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the degree:
* The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education (Umalusi) with an achievement rating of 4 (adequate achievement, 50-59 %) or better in four subjects. In addition, applicants must have a minimum point score of 30. A grade 12 certificate with exemption is required if grade 12 has been achieved before 2008

  • Students are admitted through conditional, age exemption of 23 years.
  • Students should have successfully completed Humanities, Management Sciences and Law Foundation. This a bridging programme for students who failed to obtain matric/grade 12 exemption.


Bachelor of Education (B.ED) Honours

Description
The B.ED (Hons) is the first postgraduate degree in the field of education.
Each qualification carries 120 credits.

Admission requirements

  • Students must be in possession of a recognized University degree and a teacher qualification
  • A four year integrated teaching qualification
  • An advanced certificate in education.

Duration of the programme
Each degree is offered for the duration of a minimum of two years full-time.

Assessment
Assessment will be according to the university rules.
