Disability Unit

The disability unit is a centre which assist students who have barriers to learning due to disabilities. Students living with disabilities need added support due to the uniqueness of their physiological make up.

Services offered to students living with disabilities are:

  • Orientation and mobility training to familiarise students with their surroundings
  • Computer training to develop essential skills for the use of adaptive advanced technology.
  • Technical support for visually impaired students with brailling and scanning of learning materials
  • Train students on how to use assistive devices
  • Facilitate tests and examination writing centres

Position: Senior Clerk

Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts Honours in International Relations (University of Venda)
Bachelor of Arts International Relations (University of Venda)
Certificate in Basic Braille (Phangami Technology)

Mr Sirwali’s responsibilities include Carrying out general administration duties and managing the reception desk. To provide required student support services which also takes into account the unique needs of students with diverse disabilities; empathy and ability to cope under pressure. To control budget in collaboration with Head of Unit and processing of requisitions. Scan, edit and develop learning materials in different formats such as Braille and MP3 Audio files. Update adapted software’s in the unit. Provide support during training of students and staff in the use of adapted technology. Provide technical support during tests and examination

Position: Library Liaison Officer

Qualifications: Masters in Public Management (University of Venda)
Bachelor of Arts in Education (University of Venda)
Elementary (Braille Optima College, Pretoria)
Computer Diploma (Vhembe FET College)
Access Technology (Carol Center for the Blind, USA)

Mr Gadisi is responsible for Continuous needs analysis, advocacy with stakeholders for reasonable academic accommodation, assisting students with disabilities with resources for writing tests, assignment and research. Provision of technical support during tests and examination, training students and staff on adapted technologies, drawing of exam time table, management of the adapted lab and liaising with academics on issues pertaining to disabilities. Liaise with disabled students and library regarding collection of articles and research needs.

Mrs Matodzi’s primary responsibility is to provide students with Academic and Social Support, she Advocate for the creation of barrier –free leaning and living environment for students with disabilities, Offer Academic Counselling and Support for Students with disabilities. Provide Development and graduate placement and advice schools and faculties on selection and admission of students with disabilities into the study programme. Provide research and community engagement.
