The School of Health Sciences is one of the eight Schools comprising of four departments and one centre. The department of Advanced Nursing Science is established in 1986, Public Health in 1998, Nutrition in 2000, and Psychology which has existed for many years under the School of Human and Social Sciences and incorporated into the School in 2002. The Center for Biokinetics, Recreation and Sport Science is an additional unit, established in 2001 and started its programmes in 2002. The School is dedicated to provide a community and outcome-based education of interdisciplinary and multi-sectional nature aimed at preparing competent, critically thinking, proactive and culture-sensitive practitioners capable of meeting the health needs of the communities at local, regional, national, and international levels.
The school offers both professional and academic programmes in CESM categories 09 and 18, in a diverse of disciplines at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels using appropriate learning methodologies and research. The introduction of Problem-Based Learning Methodology, Integrated with Community-Based Learning in 2007 further justifies its uniqueness in terms of providing primary health care services in the rural communities of Limpopo province. The school has Biokinetics clinic on campus that is used for experiential learning.
It should also be noted that growth in the economy is highly influenced by the health status of the people of its country. Another challenge that is facing the health care delivery is the HIV/AIDS epidemic with its opportunistic infection; mental health problems; disability and premature death especially of the poorest people and drug abuse increase the burden to the health care facilities particularly the local communities in which the School serve. This means that the country can only succeed if there are sufficient, knowledgeable and skilled health professionals to promote healthy life style and the prevention of diseases and this is supported by the vision and mission of the school.
