Prof Roelofse appointed programme chairman
of International Policing
Executive Symposium
Prof Cornelis Roelofse, Head of Univen’s Department of Criminal Justice, has been appointed as the chairman of this year’s International Policing Executive Symposium. Themed ‘Tourism, strategic locations, and major events: Policing in an age of mobility, mass movement and migration’, the conference held in Malta took place in March. “The conference draws police
practitioners and researchers from all over the world. In light of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, this is an excellent theme. The appointment of a South African academic as the programme chair is good for the country, the University and for me as a person,” says Roelofse. Prof Anthony Minnaar, President of the Criminological and Victimological Society of Southern Africa will also present a paper – ‘International event security: The case of the security plan for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup’. The International Police Executive Symposium, founded in 1994, brings police researchers and practitioners together to facilitate cross-cultural, international and interdisciplinary exchanges for the enrichment of the policing profession. It encourages discussions and writing on challenging topics of contemporary importance through an array of initiatives including conferences and publications. Past meeting themes covered topics from police education to corruption. To date, meetings have been held throughout North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
