Univen open day empowers grade 12 learners

The University of Venda hosted its first ever Open day on Saturday, 20 August 2011. The event was officially opened by Professor Base Khoza, Dean of the School of Health Sciences on behalf of the Vice Chancellor and Principal, Prof Peter Mbati.
The purpose of the event was to disseminate information to the grade 12 learners about the programmes and services that are available at the University. Staff members were given the opportunity to showcase what they offer in their respective Schools and Departments. Below are some of the comments made by the grade 12 learners who attended the Open day. Mathidzha Muofhe,
one of the learners from Azwifarwi Secondary School, said that she knew very little about Univen before, but now she knows, amongst others, how the library works, that the book is borrowed for 7 days, exceeding the borrowing period a R3, 00 fine per day will be imposed “. I did not know that the University also offers a course in Town and Regional Planning, but I am looking forward to enroll here next year for Nutrition, my second choice will be Zoology with Social Work as third choice”, said Muofhe. She went on saying that now she also know the amount of points she must achieve in order to be considered for admission into certain undergraduate programmes. “I am satisfied with the information that I have received today from this event, and I will be able to make informed career choice”,
Another learner from Azwifarwi Secondary School, Mudzanani Priscilla said that she did not know anything about the radio studio before, until she saw the sample that was brought into the Auditorium from Univen Radio. She went on saying that she also learned a lot about how the library works, because they do not have a library at their school. “I am interested in enrolling for Soil Science degree, in the School of Agriculture, because there is a high demand for people in that field and only few students are doing it, it was also interesting to see the hydrometer, the instrument used to test soil”, concluded Priscilla.
The open day will hopefully yield positive results as learners had adequate time to interact with staff members from various schools and departments regarding programmes on offer including admission related matters.
