Legal Practitioners Converge At Univen
A team of Legal Practitioners
The University of Venda successfully hosted a one-day Legal Practitioner’s Forum meeting on Thursday, 16 September 2010, at the University Council Chambers.
More than 28 Legal practitioners from different institutions of higher Learning in South Africa, attended the meeting. The following institutions were represented: North West University, Tshwane University of Technology, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Cape Town, University of Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, Mangosuthu University of Technology, Vaal University of Technology, Durban University of Technology, University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Limpopo, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and University of Venda.
During the forum, experts presented the latest developments in, for example : The Protection of Information Bill 6 of 2010: Implications for Universities, Difference between Disputes of Right of Interest: Lessons from the Court Case of Polokwane Municipality vs SALGA 2008 (29) ILJ 2269 (LC), The Right to join a trade union: Senior managers, The Consumer Protection Act No. 68 0f 2008: Implications for universities and the position of Legal Advisors/practitioner’s office within the university structure. Each presentation was followed by questions and discussion sessions.
The main objectives of the forum were to enable University Legal Practitioners to meet regularly with a view to share notes by discussing individual legal issues emanating from different institutions impacting on the smooth running of the institutions and also to discuss eminent legislative and other legal developments in the field of law with a view to update each other and also debate appropriate approaches to the issues. Another important objective was to make joint presentations as universities to government departments, and also portfolio committees of Parliament on issues affecting universities.
