The Centre for Biokinetics, Recreation and Sport science (CBRSS) impacts knowledge to students, the UNIVEN staff and surrounding community concerning good health and wellness practices for health and wellness promotion.
Mission
The Centre for Biokinetics, Recreation and Sport science trains individuals to be well educated and capable of continuing to learn and develop intellectually after graduation and take up major responsibilities for professional and personal development as Biokineticists/ Certified Leisure Practitioners/ Sport Science Specialists and Providers of appropriate cost effective services to communities in South Africa
Departmental profile
Since its inception and apart from the academic responsibilities, the Centre has been engaged in researches, community services and outreach programmes/projects, organising workshops and seminars, assisted in assessing national and provincial athletes for various levels of competitions, conduct clinic for health promotion and wellness and fitness assessment as well as promote the broader intellectually and culturally enriching roles of university education.
The Centre in addition to the three qualifications also offers Certificate in Sport Coaching and Certificate in Sport Management. In line with the University mandate to convert to Comprehensive University, the Centre has developed one professional, career-focused programme – the one-year Advanced Diploma in Sport Management which will commence in 2016. During the next 5-year plan (2016-2020), the Centre plans to offer the Master’s degree in Biokinetics, Master’s degree in Sport Science and Master’s degree in Recreation and Leisure studies. During the 2019-2020 academic year, the Centre plans to develop a PhD programme in Human movement sciences.
The Centre graduated its first cohort of graduates in 2007 for students who completed their training in 2006. The student enrolment has progressively increased since 2003. The Centre is well equipped with a functional Biokinetic and Sport Science laboratory and equipment for training in Recreation and Leisure Studies. The Centre boasts of excellent records of success, throughput and graduation rates. The introduction of the Problem-Based Learning methodology, integrated with Community-Based Learning has further added impetus to the academic performance and success of the students. The Biokinetic programme was accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in 2008 and 2015 as well as overseen by the Biokinetics Association of South Africa (BASA).
