On Wednesday, 06 October 2021, the Directorate of International Relations of the University of Venda (UNIVEN) hosted the Fulbright Scholarship Programme to encourage and discuss the programme and application process with interested staff and students. This information session was held at the University’s Council Chambers. The attendees were honours, masters and PhD students including some of UNIVEN staff members.

The Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship is an opportunity for South African university graduates to pursue a master’s or doctoral degree at any American universities. The grant is a two-year award towards a master’s and four-year for a doctorate.

The session was officially opened by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Postgraduate Studies, Prof Nosisi Feza who welcomed the delegates and attendees. She further gave an overview of UNIVEN’s current cooperation in place with U.S. universities/colleges/community colleges and encouraged staff and students not to miss the opportunity that can develop and advance their educational careers. She also highlighted that she is an alumnus of the Fulbright Scholarship Programme.

Fulbright Scholarship Programme Coordinators, Charmain Botha and Melissa Barkhuizen from the United States (US) Embassy in Pretoria gave a presentation to all interested academics and scholars across disciplines on all available Fulbright Scholarships. Their Presentation also touched on enhancing International opportunities through fellowships and grants.

In their presentation, they highlighted the Fulbright Student programme which targets candidates who want to pursue an MA or a PhD in the United States and an option to apply for a non-degree one-year research fellowship. South African PhD candidates would be eligible for the non-degree option. They could go to the U.S. for a year of research toward their PhD in South Africa.
