University of Venda strengthens the ties that bind its core business with the communities through heritage

On 23 September 2026, the University of Venda’s (UNIVEN) Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, through the Department of Human Sciences, joined the Thomo Village community in celebrating this year’s heritage. UNIVEN’s participation in this year’s Heritage Day at the Thomo Heritage Park in Thomo Village sent a clear message that heritage is not static but can also serve as a tool for promoting social cohesion, national unity, Ubuntu, and a shared collective identity. The UNIVEN’s Acting Chief Operating Officer, Dr Takalani Dzaga, sent the message to the Thomo community and the audience, which was read by Prof Takalani Mashau, the Deputy Dean of Research and Postgraduate Studies in the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education. In his message, Dr Dzaga expressed that “as a comprehensive, rural-based institution, UNIVEN’s core mandate extends far beyond classroom boundaries. We believe that our growth is deeply intertwined with the development and prosperity of our local communities.”

Prof Takalani Mashau, Deputy Dean: Research and Postgraduate Studies

UNIVEN signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Thomo Heritage Park (THP), which was established due to the abundance of archaeological and historical sites around the Thomo village. This inheritance from the past uniquely positions both institutions in conducting research and publication on Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), Heritage Studies (HS), and Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), which emphasise education, research, and capacity building as key safeguarding measures, as well as the establishment and management of museums, food security, and Cultural Resource Management (CRM).

Dr Dzaga highlighted the importance of this MOU and reflected on UNIVEN’s commitment to preserving heritage, unlocking economic opportunities, and building capacity where it matters most. While acknowledging and applauding the Thomo Heritage Park’s resilience, unified spirit, and visionary leadership, UNIVEN also pledged its ongoing commitment to supporting the initiative through scientific research, engaged scholarships, knowledge exchange, and community engagement initiatives aimed at uplifting livelihoods and empowering the youth.
