Konanani Rasimphi, a 19-year-old first-year IKS student at the University of Venda (UNIVEN), has been selected for the Universal Greening Organisation’s 2025 fellowship programme. The programme, which took place in Botswana from 24 September to 2 October 2025, brought together young leaders from diverse backgrounds to learn about sustainability, community development, and social entrepreneurship.

During the programme, Konanani and her fellows participated in various activities, including visits to public areas, cultural landmarks, and the University of Botswana. They explored the Airport Junction mall, where they discovered shops not found in South Africa, and visited the Three Dikgosi Monument, a cultural landmark honouring the nation’s founding fathers. Konanani was particularly fascinated by the role of traditional chiefs in Botswana’s parliamentary system, highlighting the importance of Indigenous wisdom. “As an Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS) student, I found it significant that in Botswana, the chiefs of each village are still recognised and serve as parliamentary advisors,” she said.

The fellowship also included a visit to the University of Botswana, which was built on the site of former sweatshops. Konanani learned about the university’s history and the sacrifices made by the Batswana people to establish an institution of higher learning. “This emphasises the harmonious and peaceful living amongst the Batswana people. Almost everything in their nation belongs to all,” she noted.

The programme’s curriculum consisted of five modules: community development, technology and innovation, social entrepreneurship, personal development and ethical leadership, and sustainability. Konanani found the programme to be a valuable experience that not only enhanced her knowledge but also provided an opportunity to step out of her comfort zone. “I learned the value of teamwork and starting wherever you are because there is never a proper time or correct decision,” she said.
