WELCOME MESSAGE BY THE EXECUTIVE DEAN
Greetings and welcome to the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education at the University Venda, also known as UNIVEN, in Thohoyandou. If you are joining us as a student or as an academic staff member, please be advised that now is a truly exciting time to join the FHSSE as the new faculty is just beginning to take shape. The University of Venda Strategic Planning Framework 2021-2025 provides a new pathway effective from January 2021. The 2021-2025 framework also directs the university as regards size and shape for the future. This is encapsulated in the University launching of three (3) faculties that resulted as a merger of the previous seven (7) schools. The 4thfaculty is formed by the 8th school that did not, for strategic reasons merge. The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education is a result of a merger of the former School of Education and School of Human and Social Sciences. The newly integrated faculty has a combination of some extraordinary talent, with an increased potential to make a transformative impact on the fields of Education, Human and Social Sciences. Needless to say, this is aimed to deliver tangible benefits for colleagues, students, and community.
As a faculty, we have many successes to celebrate. We are providing exciting and diverse educational opportunities for both our undergraduate and postgraduate students from all backgrounds and locations. The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education houses the following disciplines, Anthropology, Education, Gender Studies, Languages and Literature, Language Practice, Media Studies, Music, History, Political Sciences, International Relations, Theology, Religious Studies, Sociology, Youth Studies, Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Social Work. These disciplines deal with the multiple dimensions and multi-layered human experiences and provide an opportunity to make our students to make social impact within the communities they live. We offer many different major courses of study that prepare students for impactful success in the real world. This is aligned with our new 2021-2025 Strategic Plan which will, hopefully, among others, “…produce graduates that are locally relevant and globally competitive”. To achieve this strategic goal, the faculty is comprised by a corps of dedicated professionals who have expertise in their disciplines and also excel in connecting with students and providing educational experience equal to that of any other university.
As Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, part of my objectives include examining the quality of our work to ensure improvement by increasing the visibility of the development of our researcher’s scholars and graduates in Humanities, Social Sciences and Education. Knowledge should be integrated across many areas throughout students’ life as well as to prepare them to make positive contributions to their community and their workplace. Analytical and problem-solving skills, independent thinking acceptance of new ideas are key and fundamental competencies required in graduates that can lead in engaged scholarship, locally relevant and globally competitive. To this end, the Faculty encourages you to take advantage of, and engage with, the many opportunities made available to you on campus and beyond. Our Faculty is predicated upon a multi-, inter-, and Transdisciplinary approach towards engaging with issues and it our firm belief that these approaches yield tangible results for the communities served by the University of Venda, especially but not limited to, postgraduate studies. We are persuaded that you will find your experiences within the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education and the University to be wholly positive and beneficial. We encourage you to take advantage and engage with the many opportunities made available to you on campus and beyond to enrich your experiences likely to permeate through your lives as a direct result of having registered for a qualification in our faculty.
I, once again, welcome you to the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education and thank you for having chosen us as your point of departure to pursue your studies at the University of Venda.
