About the Department:

The Department of Professional and Curriculum Studies’ mission is to produce dynamic, innovative, ethical, and professional teachers who are locally relevant and globally competitive. The Department houses one programme for initial qualifications for teachers in secondary schools, namely, Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Senior and Further Education and Training teaching. Students specialise in several subjects offered in secondary schools. The Department also offers several programmes at Honours, Masters, and Doctoral levels with specialisations in Curriculum Studies, Mathematics Education and Science Education.

Undergraduate qualifications offered:

• Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Senior and Further Education and Training teaching

• Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

The minimum admission requirement for PGCE is an appropriate diploma or bachelor’s degree. An appropriate diploma or degree includes sufficient disciplinary learning in appropriate academic fields to enable the development of teaching specialisation phases or/and subjects as specified for the Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching. The basic qualification should include at least 24 credits at Level 6 for teaching a Senior Phase subject specialisation and 48 credits (at least 24 at Level 7) to teach a Further Education and Training subject specialisation.

Master of Education:

• Master of Education in Chemistry Education
• Master of Education in Curriculum Studies
• Master of Education in Life Sciences Education
• Master Education in Physics Education

Doctor of Education:

• Doctor of Education in Chemistry Education
• Doctor of Education in Mathematics Education
• Doctor of Education in Physics Education
• Doctor of Education in Curriculum Studies
• Doctor of Education in Science Education

Postgraduate admission requirements:

• Bachelor of Education Honours degrees

The BEd (Honours) qualifications admit candidates with a Four-year professional teaching degree or an appropriate Bachelor’s degree and a recognised professional teaching qualification, or a Four-year professional teaching qualification as well as an Advanced Diploma in a cognate sub-field of education.

• Master’s in education Degrees

A Bachelor of Education Honours degree or an appropriate 480 credit Level 8 professional Bachelor’s degree, or a relevant Honours degree. A Postgraduate Diploma meeting the HEQSF research requirement of at least 30 credits may also be recognised as for entry into a cognate Master of Education degree programme.

• Doctoral Degrees in Education

The minimum admission requirements for a Doctoral degree in the field of education is a Master of Education degree or another appropriate Master’s degree.

Career opportunities:

The three broad qualification pathways qualified teachers may follow with a view to advancing their careers are 1) a teaching and learning pathway in their subjects of specialisation, 2) a management and leadership pathway, and 3) an educational planning, research and/or policy development pathway.
