The Department has highlighted the achievements of students who have undergone comprehensive preparation, training, and mentorship by ICT staff members.

A Journey of Innovation and Growth: My Experience with the Huawei ICT Academy – Basetsana Phahlamohlaka


Reflecting on her journey with the Huawei ICT Academy, Basetsana confidently stated that it has been one of the most transformative experiences in her academic and professional development. During the 2023/2024 Huawei ICT Competition, she participated in the Innovation track, where her team proudly secured first place in the Sub-Saharan region, earning a place in the global finals held in China.

This competition was far more than a technical challenge; it was a gateway to innovation, collaboration, and personal growth. It pushed her beyond her comfort zone and taught her the importance of persistence, teamwork, and creative problem-solving under pressure. “I evolved not only as a student of technology but also as a critical thinker, a proactive contributor, and someone who believes deeply in their own potential,” said Basetsana.

Through Huawei’s mentorship and international exposure, she gained a clearer understanding of what it means to contribute to a digital future. The hands-on experience in system devel-opment and innovation inspired her to pursue her Honours degree in Computer Science with renewed purpose and passion. As she remarked, “Today, I continue to expand my expertise in areas such as networking, cybersecurity, and intelligent systems, fields that were first introduced to me through the Academy.

As I complete my Honours Degree at the University of Venda, I look forward to a future filled with opportunity. I am committed to bridging digital divides, empowering emerging innovators, and contributing to the development of smarter, more connected communities. The foundation laid by the Huawei ICT Academy remains a cornerstone of my journey, a story defined by growth, resilience, and limitless potential.”
My Journey with Huawei ICT Academy – Anniba Ombetshela Raphasha


His academic journey commenced in 2019 at the University of Venda, where he pursued a degree in Computer Science. During this time, he was introduced to the Huawei ICT Academy, a pivotal experience that significantly influenced his career trajectory. From 2019 to 2020, Anniba focused on networking and big data, serving as an Academy Ambassador and further developing his leadership and organisational abilities.
In 2021, he received recognition as a Top Performing Ambassador, which strengthened his commitment and enthusiasm for data.

The following year, earning Huawei’s Big Data Certification enabled him to land a Data Analyst internship at Nielsen prior to graduation, where he utilised predictive modelling and analytics.
Upon completing my degree, I advanced in my career with positions at Agroserve and subsequently at One Power Cloud, where I provided business intelligence insights to clients within the automotive sector. Currently, I hold the position of Data Engineering and Business Intelligence (BI) Specialist as well as Cloud Architect at Curis Solutions, concentrating on healthcare data management and cloud-based solutions.” He pointed out.

He added, “I am committed to advancing my expertise in cloud computing, with the goal of becoming an advanced cloud architect. The Academy has played a pivotal role in providing purpose, essential skills, and the motivation to pursue greater ambitions in the field.”

As he concluded, Anniba expressed his sincere appreciation to the University of Venda for providing and supporting these impactful opportunities.
How Huawei Turned My Curiosity into Reality – Prudence Tshembo Khosa

As an Environmental Science student at the University of Venda, her journey into technology began with curiosity about the Huawei ICT Competition. Joining the Huawei ICT Academy transformed that curiosity into a deep passion for networking and data communication. Late-night lab sessions and hands-on learning sparked a love for solving real-world challenges.

She said the ICT Competition tested her technical skills, teamwork, and resilience, while Huawei’s mentorship helped her master advanced concepts. These experiences led her to full Datacom certification and later to her first HCIP exam milestones, which validated her growth and opened doors in the ICT industry.

“Today, I work as a full Engineer at Huawei Office Park and have received an offer as a Pre-Sales Engineer, thanks to the strong foundation built through the Academy. Huawei did not just teach me technology; it instilled confidence, resilience, and a sense of purpose,” she indicated.

She left an indelible message, “To future students: take that first step. The Huawei ICT Academy offers more than technical training; it is a gateway to innovation, growth, and a career shaped by passion.”
A Transformative Journey: From UNIVEN to the ICT Industry – Nduvho Madzivhandila


Nduvho Madzivhandila’s academic journey at the University of Venda was a profoundly transformative one. As an engaged and proactive student, he participated in various campus initiatives that challenged his thinking, broadened his perspective, and ultimately introduced him to the world of technology in ways he had never anticipated.

The turning point came when Nduvho joined the Huawei ICT Academy. Seizing the opportunity wholeheartedly, he embarked on a new chapter marked by growth, purpose, and boundless potential. Through the Academy, Nduvho was exposed to cutting-edge technologies, including 5G, Cloud Computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT). This experience bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, significantly expanding his technical horizons.

The Huawei programme not only enhanced his technical capabilities but also bolstered his professional confidence. A highlight of this journey was the opportunity to travel internationally. “Visiting Spain was a truly enriching experience that deepened my global outlook and reinforced my passion for technology. The hands-on training and exposure to real-world innovation underscored the power of technology to drive meaningful change,” said Nduvho.

Following his graduation, Nduvho transitioned seamlessly into the IT industry, specialising in both on-premises and cloud infrastructure. Nduvho currently serves as a Server Engineer at one of South Africa’s premier medical diagnostics companies, renowned for its expertise in pathology and laboratory testing services. In this role, he contributes to the digital transformation initiatives that support and modernise healthcare delivery.

The foundation laid by the Huawei ICT Academy has continued to shape Nduvho’s professional path. Beyond technical knowledge, it instilled in him a mindset rooted in continuous learning, innovation, and excellence.

Reflecting on this journey, “I am filled with gratitude. The University of Venda did not just award me a degree; it helped me uncover my true potential,” said Nduvho.
