The University of Venda proudly celebrates the outstanding academic achievement of Dr Thizwilondi Joanbeth Madima, a lecturer in the Department of Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Heritage Studies, who graduated with a Master of Indigenous Knowledge Systems from North-West University on 8 May 2026 at the Mahikeng Campus.
Dr Madima’s academic journey reflects a deep commitment to advancing Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), one of the University of Venda’s niche academic areas. Although she already holds a Master of African Studies and a PhD in African Studies, she intentionally pursued a specialised Master’s qualification in IKS to strengthen her expertise and contribute directly to the growth of Indigenous Knowledge scholarship in South Africa.
Her research, titled “Utilizing Liquefied Decomposed Cow Dung as Organic Manure for Indigenous Farming in Vuwani Communities, Limpopo Province,” explores sustainable Indigenous agricultural practices that respond to climate change, food security, and community development challenges. The study contributes meaningfully to African Indigenous innovation and environmentally sustainable farming approaches.
This achievement was further strengthened through the University Staff Development Programme (USDP) Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) grant, funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and managed by the University of Pretoria. The fellowship empowered Dr Madima through research capacity development, academic mentorship, publication support, and innovation training, contributing significantly to her growing research profile and scholarly impact.
Significantly, Dr Madima is the first academic staff member within the University of Venda to obtain a dedicated Master’s qualification in Indigenous Knowledge Systems from NWU. Her achievement demonstrates visionary leadership, academic excellence, and dedication to decolonising knowledge systems through teaching, research, curriculum development, and community engagement.
As a lecturer teaching in the Bachelor of Indigenous Knowledge Systems programme at UNIVEN, Dr Madima continues to inspire students and communities through her work in Indigenous agriculture, heritage preservation, innovation, and sustainable development. Her academic contributions continue to position the University of Venda as a national and international leader in Indigenous Knowledge scholarship.
The University congratulates Dr Thizwilondi Joanbeth Madima on this remarkable milestone and for continuing to elevate the profile of Indigenous Knowledge Systems in higher education.
