The University of Venda (UNIVEN) running team delivered an inspiring performance at the 2026 Comrades Marathon, successfully completing one of the world’s most demanding ultramarathons while embodying the values of perseverance, unity, and resilience.

Held on 14 June 2026, under the motivating theme “Ska Fela Moya” (Don’t Give Up), the 2026 Comrades Marathon 99th edition, once again challenged athletes to push beyond their physical and mental limits. Amid the grueling conditions and relentless demands of “The Ultimate Human Race,” the UNIVEN runners distinguished themselves not only through their determination but also through their remarkable spirit of camaraderie.

The University of Venda was proudly represented by: Dr Legodi Malebogo (46729), Mr Genius Katekwe (47341), Mr Kudakwashe Madzima (30112), Adv Rudzani Makhema (22742), Mr Mzwakhe Matukane (23681), Dr Thakhani Ravhele (16569) and Ms Tshimangadzo (5042).
A defining moment of the race came when Dr Thakhani Ravhele, Mr Kudakwashe Madzima, and Dr Malebogo Legodi crossed the finish line hand in hand, symbolising the collective spirit that had carried them through the demanding journey. Their emotional finish captured the essence of the Comrades Marathon, where personal achievement is elevated through teamwork, mutual support, and shared sacrifice.
Earlier in the race, all UNIVEN runners had successfully crossed the halfway mark before 11:00, demonstrating disciplined pacing, strategic preparation, and unwavering determination. As the race progressed, each athlete continued to display extraordinary resilience in pursuit of the finish line.

Throughout the marathon, the runners received constant encouragement from a dedicated UNIVEN support team led by Dr Takalani Dzaga, Director of Marketing, Branding and Communication. The support team travelled to Durban to motivate and cheer on the athletes at halfway point along the route, providing much-needed inspiration during the most challenging stages of the race.
The University Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Bernard Nthambeleni encouraged the runners to remain focused and resilient, reminding them that they were not only running for personal achievement but were proudly carrying the University’s colours and values.
“Today, you are ambassadors of the University of Venda. Every step you take reflects the determination, excellence, and resilience that define our institution. Remember the Comrades theme, ‘Ska Fela Moya’—do not give up. The entire UNIVEN community is behind you, and we are proud of your courage and commitment. Finish strong and know that your efforts inspire us all,” concluded Prof Nthambeleni.
The words of encouragement resonated strongly with the athletes and reflected the University community’s unwavering support throughout the event. The Comrades Marathon is widely regarded as one of the toughest endurance races in the world, testing not only physical strength but also mental fortitude and emotional resilience. Simply completing the race is considered a significant achievement, and the performance of the UNIVEN runners stands as a testament to their dedication and discipline.

The University of Venda congratulates all its runners for their outstanding representation of the institution. Their participation continues to strengthen the University’s reputation for promoting wellness, sporting excellence, and holistic development among staff and students.
As the race concluded, the UNIVEN community celebrated more than a sporting achievement. The runners’ journey and their symbolic finish embodied the values of unity, sacrifice, perseverance, and brotherhood, qualities that continue to inspire the University community and the broader society.
