As thousands of runners prepare to tackle the iconic 99th Comrades Marathon on 14 June 2026, one participant will carry not only months of training but also the determination and discipline that have defined his academic career.

Dr Thakhani Ravele, a lecturer in the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the University of Venda (UNIVEN), is set to make his debut in the world’s most celebrated ultramarathon. Originally from Lwamondo Tshivhale, Pambani in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, Dr Ravele is a professional statistician whose expertise spans statistical learning, time-series analysis, and predictive modeling.

His running journey began only two years ago, in July 2024. Since then, he has rapidly progressed through the ranks of distance running, completing four half-marathons, seven marathons, and two ultramarathons, including the prestigious Two Oceans Marathon and the Loskop Marathon Series. Along the way, he has overcome injury setbacks while maintaining remarkable consistency and earning several race medals.

For Dr Ravele, running mirrors the principles that underpin both academic excellence and personal growth: discipline, resilience, and continuous improvement. The Comrades Marathon, he says, is more than a race; it is a test of preparation, perseverance, and the commitment to finish what one starts.
While his professional life revolves around data, analysis, and problem-solving, long-distance running has become a powerful outlet for building mental toughness, focus, and endurance.

As he prepares for the historic race, Dr Ravele has expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the University community. He acknowledges the financial assistance provided by the UNIVEN Athletics Club runners’ representative, Ms Busi Magabe, and the Director of Human Resources, Mrs Uanda Ndou, as well as the unwavering encouragement of his family and colleagues.

Driven by faith and determination, Dr Ravele remains confident as he approaches the starting line.
“Although my experience in running and sport may seem limited, I trust that God will enable me to finish the Comrades Marathon. With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible,” he said, quoting Matthew 19:26.

On 14 June, Dr Ravele will join thousands of runners on the road between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, carrying with him the hopes of his supporters and proving that endurance, whether in academia or athletics, is built one step at a time.

As Dr Thakhani Ravele prepares to take his place on the starting line of the 99th Comrades Marathon, the University of Venda stands firmly behind him. His journey is a testament to the power of discipline, determination, and unwavering commitment to excellence. The entire UNIVEN community wishes him strength, endurance, and success as he pursues this remarkable milestone. “Go, Dr Ravele, go! May every stride bring you closer to a triumphant finish and a memorable Comrades debut.”
