The University of Venda Human Resources Department hosted the Performance Management Training Workshop aimed at equipping newly appointed staff members with essential knowledge and skills to effectively participate in the University’s performance management processes and contracting. The workshop took place on 25 February 2026, at the Council Chamber.

The workshop was designed to introduce new employees to the University’s performance management framework and to strengthen understanding of goal setting, performance monitoring, and evaluation. This formal initiative forms part of the University’s commitment to promoting accountability, professional development, and institutional excellence among staff members.

Adv Rudzani Makhema, Head of Employee Relations

Adv Rudzani Makhema, Head of Employee Relations, opening the session, outlined the objectives and importance of performance management within the institution. Standing in for the Director of Human Resources, Mrs Uanda Ndou, Adv Makhema explained that the workshop was designed to familiarise staff with the University’s performance management system and emphasised that performance management is central to achieving the institution’s strategic goals. He noted that effective performance begins with proper planning and contracting between employees and their supervisors, forming the foundation for monitoring and evaluating performance throughout the year.

Mr Kenneth Mphaphuli, Head of Organisational Development and Training

The main presentation was delivered by Mr Kenneth Mphaphuli, Head of Organisational Development and Training who emphasised that performance management should be viewed as a supportive tool rather than a punitive measure. He encouraged participants to approach the Performance Management System (PMS) with a positive mindset, noting that the Human Resources Division aims to assist staff members to perform better and develop professionally. He stressed that performance management is intended to help employees meet their goals while contributing to the University’s broader strategic objectives.

Mr Mphaphuli explained that the Organisational Development and Training unit plays a key role in supporting staff through training, skills development, organisational design and talent management initiatives. He highlighted that the unit is responsible for ensuring that employees are properly capacitated and aligned with the University’s strategic direction, while also providing support on matters such as job profiles, performance contracting and staff development opportunities.

He further outlined the importance of aligning individual performance agreements with the University’s strategic priorities, including student-centredness, research and innovation, people and wellness, and partnerships. Staff members were encouraged to work closely with their supervisors to develop realistic performance targets and maintain regular communication.

Mphaphuli also introduced participants to the Online Performance Management System and explained that the practical demonstration would help staff understand how to capture performance agreements and monitor progress throughout the year. He reassured participants that the Human Resources Division remains available to provide guidance and support on performance management processes.

Mrs Louisa Mariba, the Organisational Development Practitioner

Staff members that were present received a demonstration of the Online Performance Management System, presented by Mrs Louisa Mariba, the Organisational Development Practitioner, which focused on the practical use of the system and reporting processes.

Mrs Mariba provided a detailed walkthrough of the university’s online Performance Management System (PMS), explaining how staff can create and manage their performance contracts in collaboration with their line managers.

The Performance Management Training Workshop plays a significant role in supporting new staff members as they integrate into the University environment and align their individual performance goals in line with the broader 2026-2030 strategic objectives of the institution.
