The University of Venda’s Centre for Biokinetics, Recreation and Sports Science hosted Prof L.O Amusa Memorial Lecture by Prof Charl Roux from the University of Johannesburg. The Memorial Lecture was held on Friday, 20 July 2018 at the University’s Sports Hall under the theme ‘The need for value management in Leisure, Recreation and Sport Science’.

Opening the Lecture, Prof Roux shared his experience with Prof Amusa when they were still Head of Departments at their respective Universities and recalls his passion, knowledge and sense of humor and thus making reference to ‘leaving an educational legacy everywhere you go’.

His Lecture dwelled on Physical Education and its need to be infused into school curriculums and further highlighted the detriments of the government wanting to cut off Life Orientation and replace it with History as a mandatory subject. He made reference to statistics that show that there is a health crisis
that exists within the youth in relation to physical activity and physical education.

Prof Roux lectured on Values of Education and its importance on the current education system and how in general principles form part of personality and identity shaping. According to Prof Roux there should be a deliberate pedagogy of values education and that it will not accept mere universal values.

Towards the conclusion of his lecture, he gave solutions to problems posed in his lecture. Among the pool of solutions, he mentioned the giving of proper quality training to facilitators of values, physical education and the need to implement and fuse them into school curriculums. Prof Roux talked about widening involvement as a solution where teachers, students and parents collaborate on school activities.

Prof Charl Roux holds a Master’s Degree in Human Movement Studies from the University of Stellenbosch and obtained a Doctoral Degree from the University of Johannesburg in 2006. This year (2018) he obtained MA in Olympic Studies with distinction from The German Sport University of Cologne, Germany.

The Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Senior Prof Base Khoza gave the welcome and official opening of the memorial lecture. Preceding her acknowledgement of distinguished guests, Prof Khoza highlighted the contribution that the late Prof Lateef Oluwole Amusa gave towards the development of the University and the Centre of Biokinetics.

When introducing the guest speaker, Dr Cebisa Nesamvuni, Head of the Centre for Biokinetics, Recreation and Sports Science, gave a background view of the centre. She highlighted that the centre was established in 2002 under the leadership of Prof Amusa. She further mentioned that from 2003, the centre gave annual lectures on the disciplines of Biokinetics, Recreation and Leisure studies and sports science. “To memoir his dedication and efforts of putting the Centre together, the annual lectures are now called the “Prof LO Amusa memorial lecture,” she said.

Mr. Medupi Mamabolo, from the Centre of Biokinetics, Recreation and Sports Science gave the vote of thanks. He extended his appreciation to the University’s Senior Management and the Head of Departments. He further thanked Prof Roux for his continuous association with Univen as an external examiner and for coming to give this lecture.
