The start of the academic year at the University of Venda (UNIVEN) has been marked by optimism, excitement and determination as first-year students take their first confident steps into higher education and personal independence.

Ntsandeni Munyai

For 19-year-old Ntsandeni Munyai, the journey to university has been one of resilience and self-belief. A former learner at Tondalushaka Secondary School in Tshaulu village, Munyai’s path was not without obstacles. Repeating matric proved to be a defining moment that strengthened her perseverance and resolve. Coming from humble beginnings, she learned early on that success is rarely linear and that persistence often makes the difference.

Now embarking on her university journey at UNIVEN, Munyai describes her transition into campus life as smooth and welcoming. She found the registration process easy to navigate and noted that support was readily available whenever needed. “Having assistance around made everything simpler, especially as a first-time student,” she said. Studying close to home has also eased her adjustment, allowing her to settle in comfortably. While she admits to feeling slightly nervous, her excitement far outweighs any uncertainty. “University brings independence and brings me closer to my career,” she shared.

Munyai will be studying Psychology, a field she finds deeply fascinating. “It helps us understand how people think, feel and act, and why they behave the way they do,” she explained. She encourages fellow first-year students to approach the transition with confidence, adding: “Trust the process and embrace change, it can lead to growth.”

Similarly, the experience of Thabang Phaswana (19) from Maduluni village in Halambani, who matriculated at Vuvumutshena Secondary School, is similarly positive. Now registered as a first-year Bachelor of Laws (LWBBL) student at UNIVEN, Phaswana described his registration experience as seamless and reassuring. He credited student representatives for providing clear guidance throughout the process. “The registration was well organised, and the student assistants guided us step by step,” he said. “It made choosing modules less stressful and gave me confidence as I started this journey.”

Drawn to UNIVEN by its strong academic reputation, particularly in law, Phaswana is determined to excel. “I want to work hard, stay focused and always be at the top of my game,” he said, encouraging fellow first-year students to remain disciplined and goal-driven.

Together, their experiences reflect UNIVEN’s supportive environment, accessible resources and commitment to guiding students through the critical transition into university life, laying a strong foundation for both academic success and personal development.
