On Tuesday, the 17 July 2018, the Directorate of Research and Innovation in pursuit of University of Venda’s (UNIVEN’s) Strategic Objective 3: Research and Innovation Mandate met with a representative from one of its identified high-level stakeholders the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC).

The MHSC recently established the Centre of Excellence (CoE) to focus on strengthening domestic research collaboration by developing beneficial relationships with international and local research institutions amongst others. The meeting with the representative Mr. Koena Motloi the Technology Transfer and Commercialization Specialist from the MHSC-CoE is part of the realization of this mandate. On behalf of the CoE, Mr. K Motloi expressed interest in building partnerships with UNIVEN researchers on three research thrust areas:

Safety: rockfalls, rock burst, explosions & fires, Machinery and transport.
Occupational Health: airborne pollutants, physical hazards, occupational diseases.
Human Factors: behavioral safety, including special projects.

Several schools will be engaged through the Directorate of Research and Innovation in developing research proposals that will be submitted to MHSC-CoE. It was agreed that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions be established.
