Marking the critical shift from academic life to the professional world, the University of Venda’s Human Resources Department hosted a dynamic internship induction programme at the Research Conference Centre on 1 April 2026. The initiative went beyond a standard orientation, offering structured support, practical exposure, and guided development to equip interns with essential workplace skills, professional discipline, and a strong sense of purpose—ensuring they are prepared to meet both organisational expectations and broader societal responsibilities.

A group of new Interns and Presenters

Mr Kenneth Mphaphuli, Head of Organisational Development and Training

The session began with welcoming remarks from Mr Kenneth Mphaphuli, who warmly received the interns and set a positive, encouraging tone. He expressed confidence in their ability to contribute meaningfully to the university and highlighted the institution’s commitment to de-veloping future leaders.

He encouraged the interns to approach their roles with ambition, actively engage, and ask questions to enhance their learning. He also reassured them of the value of the projects they would undertake and affirmed the institution’s support throughout their journey.

Mr Matamela Matibe, the Training and Development Practitioner (SDF), University of Venda

Mr Matamela Matibe presented an induction overview covering the institution’s vision, values, culture, code of conduct, key policies and workplace expectations, while outlining available support structures for interns. He highlighted the programme’s transformative intent, aimed at bridging the gap between academic theory and practical experience to foster both personal and professional growth.
Emphasising attitude over qualifications, he encouraged interns to demonstrate professional-ism, punctuality and a strong work ethic, reminding them that their future within the institution depends on their commitment, while urging them to contribute innovative ideas and be active participants in driving positive change.

Mr Andisani Mathelemusa, Head of Department (HOD) of Student Governance, University of Venda

Mr Andisani Mathelemusa reinforced the importance of accountability, professionalism, and institutional pride, urging interns to uphold the university’s reputation and act as responsible representatives of both the institution and broader society. He encouraged them to rise above personal challenges and make meaningful contributions, emphasising discipline, collective re-sponsibility, and the value of fully embracing the opportunity to grow within the university community. Complementing this message, the induction programme featured key develop-mental components, including a workplace safety briefing by Mr Makananise, as well as work readiness and life skills sessions facilitated by the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), focusing on personal growth, career planning, and entrepreneurship. In addition, financial lit-eracy training provided by ABSA equipped interns with essential skills to manage their stipends responsibly and make informed financial decisions.

Mrs Muhlayisi Shivambu, Human Resources, University of Venda

The Human Resources department, represented by Mrs Shivambu, presented the interns’ placements, while SETA highlighted collaborative efforts to address graduate unemployment and skills development. The programme concluded with Mr Matibe reaffirming key messages, welcoming the interns, and expressing appreciation to all contributors.
