During this Gala Dinner, UNIVEN Chancellor, Adv Mojanku Gumbi, delivered the keynote address and reflected on the values of humility, legacy, and collective impact, urging all to live purposefully and stand on the right side of history. Despite being unexpectedly called to speak and nursing an injury, she emphasised the transformative power of education in breaking the cycle of poverty, likening it to China’s success in lifting millions out of poverty.
Drawing from personal experience and historical examples, she encouraged the audience to value simplicity, integrity, and social contribution, declaring: “Education is the disruptor, the change maker, and all of you who support these students in education, I tell you, you represent that one man who was standing on the dock in Hamburg in 1936 on the right side of history.” She lauded their contributions as crucial investments in national development and social equity.

He emphasised that universities exist to serve the public and address societal challenges, not merely to generate knowledge or serve internal interests.
“At the University of Venda, we prioritise access for disadvantaged stu-dents, foster impactful research, and balance academic growth with communi-ty development. As a comprehensive institution, we combine traditional and ap-plied learning while expanding infrastructure and supporting local economies.
Our focus is on producing graduates who can innovate, contribute meaningfully, and transform their own circumstances. With sound financial management and strategic ex-pansion, we aim to be a vital force for national development,’’ said Prof Nthambeleni.

We cannot do it alone, together we need to do this,” she resonated. Her speech re-affirmed the sponsors’ commitment to empowering youth through education.
