On 29 July 2025, the University of Venda (UNIVEN) hosted the Cultivating Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace programme at Disability Centre. This important initiative was aimed to promote a culture of inclusivity and respect among staff members, enhancing their ability to work together effectively and support the university’s diverse student body.
By focusing on diversity, equality, and inclusion, UNIVEN is taking proactive steps to create a workplace environment that values and empowers all employees, regardless of their background or abilities. The programme is part of the university’s ongoing efforts to foster a positive and supportive work environment that benefits everyone.
In his opening remarks, Mr Kenneth Mphaphuli explained the concept of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programme, emphasising that it’s about respecting differences, treating everyone fairly, and making sure every person feels included and valued in the workplace. He further stressed the importance of the programme and its potential benefits for all staff members who attended, encouraging them to apply the lessons in their daily work.

Ms Kitty Mthabela, Mrs Kitty Mthabela from Prospen Africa facilitated the programme

Ms. Kitty Mthabela from Prospen Africa facilitated an engaging and thought-provoking dis-cussion, sharing personal anecdotes and experiences to emphasise the importance of creating a workplace environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and includ-ed. As she aptly put it, “Africa belongs to everyone,” highlighting the need for inclusivity and acceptance. By encouraging participants to engage openly and honestly, Ms. Mthabela fostered a safe space for discussion, growth, and self-reflection, ultimately aiming to promote a deeper understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles among staff members.
Ms. Mthabela assisted the participants to explore the complexities of un-conscious bias, cultural differences, and the importance of empathy and un-derstanding in building a more inclusive and equitable work environment.
She shared a powerful example of her own bias towards Xhosa people, which was shaped by her upbringing, and how she overcame it by interacting with people from dif-ferent backgrounds. As she said, “Our backgrounds are channelling in terms of these eyes. Our backgrounds are channelling in terms of this thought process.” This ex-ample resonated with participants, encouraging them to reflect on their own biases.
By doing so, she equipped staff members with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion at UNIVEN. Ms. Mthabela’s facilitation style was engaging, informative, and thought-provoking, making the DEI program a valuable experience for all participants.

Mr Fhulufhelo Ramolusi

In his closing remarks, Mr Fhulufhelo Ramolumisi thanked all participants for their active involvement and commitment throughout the programme. He highlighted the importance of applying the lessons learned to everyday work practices and encouraged staff to continue promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion beyond the event.
