On Thursday, 16 October 2025, the University of Venda (UNIVEN) community and local pastors gathered at the University Stadium to offer prayers and support to students. The event was held in response to the challenges students had been facing, particularly with the October/November examinations approaching. It served as a moment for the University community to unite in faith, seek comfort, and renew hope.
UNIVEN SRC President Mr Tirani Mathye and University Registrar, Dr Joel Baloyi expressed support for the University Prayer Day. Mr Mathye encouraged students to pray and study, noting that faith can be a strong support when facing challenges beyond human control. Dr Baloyi thanked attendees for coming, highlighting the interconnectedness of human needs and encouraging students to reflect on their purpose. He told them to never forget the reason they are at this University. Dr Baloyi concluded by leading the attendees in a rendition of – ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” highlighting the value of prayer and seeking God’s guidance.
Apostle Dr Maxwell Masakona of Calvary Christian Church, in his sermon, encouraged students to take courage and view their studies as work, urging them to study diligently despite challenges. He said, “Take courage and believe in a willing heart. A willing heart overrides excuses.” Citing Daniel chapter 1, verse 17, and Daniel chapter 2, verses 16-19. He stressed that even the gifted need God’s mercy and guidance. “ Even though you are one of the best students in class, you need to study because there are things that you do not know and for you to know them, you need to study.
And you need to pray. Even Daniel was gifted in the interpretation of visions, but he once told his friends to ask for the mercies of God.” Apostle Masakona prayed for students to receive God’s mercy and to pass their exams.
