UNIVEN Team Captures the moment with Huawei Officials before the kick-off of the Regional Finals at the Huawei Office Park

The University of Venda (UNIVEN), through its Information Communication Technology (ICT) Department, has partnered with Huawei in implementing programmes that impart and enhance digital skills to staff and students. The University has actively participated in the annual Huawei ICT Global Competition since 2018. This esteemed event draws significant attention and participation from universities and colleges worldwide. Commencing in August and concluding in May of the following year, the competition reaches its pinnacle with a highly anticipated global final in China. The competition encompasses Cloud, Network, and Innovation tracks.
During the 2023-2024 competition, the UNIVEN team participated in the Innovation track and successfully progressed to the regional finals. The exceptional project developed by UNIVEN students, aimed at addressing some critical challenges within the transportation sector using Artificial Intelligence (AI) modelling. Competing against esteemed universities from Uganda, Tanzania, Mauritius, Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya, the University of Venda’s team emerged victorious, securing first place in the regional final with an impressive
score of 94.75, followed by Ghana with a score of 88.75. The two teams, i.e., South Africa and Ghana, will represent Africa in the Global finals, scheduled to take place from 22 to 25 May in China.

Their dedication, hard work, and innovative spirit have brought pride to the University of Venda and South Africa. We
are confident that they will continue to excel and showcase their talents on the global stage. The words of appreciation are also directed to the major stakeholders in this regard, i.e., Computer Science and Business Information System Departments, for their contributions to this remarkable achievement. As part of motivation, Dr Nkhumbuleni Ratshitanga, Hed ICT Support Services said, “It is envisaged that this achievement will also inspire the spirit of excellence; and the Automated Traffic Surveillance will also benefit the country at large.”
In his remarks, he also thanked the technology experts from the ICT Department and Computer Science who created time to guide the students in preparation for the regional finals.
