The Green Technology Confucius Institute (GTCI) at the University of Venda (UNIVEN), hosted the China–Africa Cultural Exchange Event for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, 15 October 2025, at the GTCI/Art Gallery. The event featured a vibrant student delegation from Hubei University of Technology (HBUT) in China and drew over one hundred participants. It served as a platform to showcase indigenous music, dancing, attire, poetry, storytelling, and live performances, celebrating both African and Chinese artistic traditions.

In his opening address, Mr Ted Xiong expressed sincere appreciation for the dedication of the Institute’s Chinese partners and union members. He encouraged students to stay connected with the Green Technology Confucius Institute and to seize the many opportunities that come with international collaboration. His remarks inspired enthusiasm for innovation, perseverance, and global cooperation.

Delivering the welcome speech, Prof Grace GE reflected on China’s enduring cultural legacy. She quoted an ancient saying that captures the industrious spirit of the Chinese people, linking it to the timeless values of creativity and perseverance. Prof GEe urged students and staff to appreciate how cultural understanding and technological advancement can work hand in hand to drive sustainable progress and mutual respect.

Prof Tawanda Runhare warmly welcomed the visiting HBUT students, describing their presence as a valuable opportunity for learning and exchange. He announced that from 2026, UNIVEN will introduce a Certificate of Competence in Chinese Language, supported by a team currently developing the framework for language practice. Prof Runhare encouraged both local and visiting students to learn from one another, reinforcing that education thrives through collaboration and shared experiences.

Reflecting on the progress made, Mr Thabo Dikgale described the event as a dream realised. He recalled how, not long ago, the idea of hearing Chinese spoken at UNIVEN seemed far-fetched, yet today it stands as a powerful symbol of partnership between the two nations. Mr Dikgale commended the commitment of the higher education sector in aligning efforts to make this initiative a success and encouraged continued engagement to ensure its growth and sustainability.

Adding to the sentiments, Professor Geoff Mapaya spoke about the significance of cultural pride and preservation. He praised the enthusiasm of younger students in embracing Chinese culture while reminding all present of the importance of safeguarding their own traditions. His message underscored that cultural exchange is a reciprocal process that nurtures understanding and respect on both sides.

The day culminated in a captivating cultural performance, featuring traditional Chinese musical instruments such as the Guzheng (a traditional Chinese zither), the di (Chinese bamboo flute), xiao (Chinese vertical flute), and hulusi (the gourd flute). The melodies, combined with African rhythms and poetry, created a harmonious blend of sounds and stories that celebrated the shared language of art and creativity.

In essence, the GTCI–Africa Cultural Exchange Event exemplified the spirit of international friendship, learning, and unity. It strengthened the bridge between the University of Venda, the Green Technology Confucius Institute, and Hubei University of Technology, showcasing how education and culture can unite people across continents, truly embodying the idea of learning without borders.

Closing the formal proceedings, Professor Eric Maluta delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, acknowledging the organisers, participants, and performers for their contributions. He urged students to take full advantage of such cultural and academic exchanges, emphasising the personal and professional benefits they offer.
This is the first time UNIVEN has been hosting such a large-scale student delegation from China. The event symbolises the historic moment of cultural exchange through students from China and South Africa, painting a beautiful picture of inclusion and integration in the history of the two universities and the two countries.
