Prof Joshua Edokpayi’s appointment to IUPAC Division VI highlights his leadership in environmental chemistry and water research
The University of Venda proudly announces the appointment of Professor Joshua Edokpayi as South Africa’s National Representative to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Division VI – Chemistry and the Environment for the 2026-2027 term. Professor Edokpayi is attached to the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Agriculture.
This prestigious appointment recognises Prof Edokpayi’s outstanding academic leadership and significant contributions to environmental chemistry, water quality monitoring, and sustainable wastewater management. Over the years, he has established himself as a leading scholar committed to advancing scientific solutions to water and environmental challenges both in South Africa and internationally. His research on the development of low-cost, nature-based water treatment technologies has had a significant impact on communities in water-scarce regions.
In his role with IUPAC Division VI, Prof Edokpayi will represent South Africa in global scientific engagements aimed at strengthening the role of chemistry in environmental protection and sustainable development. His key responsibilities include: Promoting collaboration between South African researchers and international experts in environmental chemistry and management, Supporting the formulation of sustainable policies for the safe management of chemicals and pollutants, Encouraging youth and early-career scientists to engage in IUPAC programmes and activities, and Enhancing Africa’s visibility and contribution to international environmental research initiatives.
This appointment not only acknowledges Prof Edokpayi’s individual accomplishments but also strengthens the University of Venda’s reputation as a centre of excellence in environmental research and community engagement. His leadership further supports the university’s commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas related to clean water, environmental sustainability, and responsible resource management.
