1. What inspired your group’s heritage look?
Our look was inspired by the rich tapestry of cultures within our team. We aimed to honour the traditions of Venda, Tsonga, Pedi, Zulu, Xhosa, and other African cultures by incorporating meaningful colours, beadwork, and patterns that reflect our individual backgrounds.
2. How did you decide on the attire and accessories?
We held a collaborative discussion where each team member shared ideas and selected attire that represented their heritage. The final ensemble featured Swati cloth, Venda prints, Xhosa and Tsonga headwraps, and Zulu beadwork, ensuring everyone felt confident and proud in their traditional attire.
3. Which culture or traditions were you highlighting?
We highlighted Venda culture, specifically through the “Shedo” outfit worn by a young woman. This traditional attire is associated with teenage girls participating in the Domba dance, a rite of passage for girls recognised as virgins in the community.
4. How did you prepare as a team?
One team member took the initiative to organise traditional items such as “Mufararo” and brought additional outfits representing various South African cultures for colleagues who didn’t have their own.
5. What was the most enjoyable part of the experience?
The highlight was witnessing the pride each person took in their heritage and learning more about one another’s backgrounds. The festive atmosphere fostered unity and mutual respect, making the day truly memorable.
6. Did you learn anything new about each other’s cultures?
Definitely! We explored unique customs, greetings, and the meanings behind specific garments and accessories. It was an enlightening experience that deepened our cultural appreciation.
7. Why is celebrating heritage at work important to you?
It promotes inclusion, respect, and understanding. Celebrating heritage allows us to bring our full selves to work, strengthens team relationships, and highlights the diversity that makes our workplace exceptional.
8. Any memorable moments from the day you’d like to share?
One standout moment was the beautiful blend of international and South African traditional attire, including Chinese garments, showcasing the multicultural spirit within our community.
During the University’s Heritage Day celebration, which was celebrated in the style of a photoshoot, the ICT team stood out for their vibrant display of traditional attire, representing diverse South African and international cultures. Winners are requested to collect their prizes from Lebogang Malope at the Main Administration Building, First Floor, Department of Human Resources.
