The University of Venda’s Department of Criminal Justice has taken a significant step towards strengthening strategic partnerships within the criminal justice sector following a collaborative meeting with the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service in Pretoria.
The UNIVEN delegation led by Head of Department of Criminal Justice, Dr Khethiwe Madima and comprising Prof Lonias Ndlovu, the Director of the School of Law, Dr Crystal Mokoena and Mr Thifulufhelwi Tshidada, was welcomed by Deputy Director-General Mr Takalani Ramaru. Mr Ramaru provided an overview of the Secretariat’s mandate, highlighting its role in advising the Ministry of Police, monitoring police performance and promoting accountability and community engagement within South Africa’s policing environment.

Discussions centered on identifying areas of mutual interest, including academic collaboration, student development, and community engagement initiatives. Presenting on behalf of the University of Venda, Dr Madima shared an overview of the Department of Criminal Justice’s academic programmes and areas of expertise. She emphasised the Department’s commitment to aligning its curriculum with industry needs while enhancing students’ employability and practical exposure.
Dr Madima further highlighted the urgency of collaborative research, noting that Thohoyandou ranks in the top 2 stations in the country for sexual offense cases, according to SAPS crime statistics. She indicated that the department aims to partner with the Secretariat to investigate the underlying causes of these trends, including the potential influence of the local student population. The initiative seeks to drive meaningful community-based interventions.
Adding to the discussion, Brigadier Sonnyboy Manthata provided an overview of crime trends in the Vhembe District, with particular focus on the Thohoyandou policing areas.

The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to formalise the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
This collaboration marks a proactive step by the University of Venda in fostering partnerships that not only enhance academic relevance but also help address pressing societal challenges.
