The University of Venda (UNIVEN) has reached another significant milestone in its research journey after successfully securing the replacement of its prestigious Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI)/National Research Foundation (NRF) South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) Tier 1 Chair in Biodiversity Value and Change. This is a remarkable achievement that reinforces the University’s position as one of South Africa’s leading centres of research excellence in biodiversity research. Following a highly competitive and rigorous national review process, the NRF has approved the appointment of Professor Lourens Swanepoel as the new holder of the SARChI Tier 1 Chair in Biodiversity Value and Change. In its official communication, the NRF congratulated UNIVEN on securing the replacement Chair and expressed confidence in UNIVEN’s ability to provide the institutional support necessary to ensure the Chair’s continued success and long-term sustainability.

The appointment follows an extensive two-phase evaluation involving internationally recognised subject experts and an independent multidisciplinary review panel, whose unanimous recommendation was subsequently endorsed by the NRF.

This achievement reflects UNIVEN’s unwavering commitment to research excellence, innovation and societal impact. It further enhances the University’s growing reputation as a research-intensive institution that nurtures world-class scholars, produces impactful knowledge and develops future generations of researchers capable of solving complex local and global challenges.

Widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most prestigious research honours, a SARChI Tier 1 Chair is awarded to established researchers with an exceptional international reputation and a proven record of research excellence. The successful appointment of Professor Swanepoel not only secures the continuation of this flagship research programme but also strengthens UNIVEN’s contribution to cutting-edge research addressing some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.

The Chair will drive pioneering research into biodiversity conservation, ecosystem resilience and environmental change at a time when protecting the planet’s natural resources has become a global priority. Through innovative research, strategic partnerships, and postgraduate training, the Chair is expected to generate knowledge that informs policy, supports sustainable development and contributes meaningfully to conservation efforts in South Africa, across Africa and beyond. The appointment marks yet another proud moment in UNIVEN’s research journey, reaffirming the University’s vision of becoming a globally recognised institution whose research transforms lives, protects biodiversity and contributes to a more sustainable future.
