The University of Venda (UNIVEN) has once again proven its place among South Africa’s leading institutions for cultivating talent, as three of its students have been named among the prestigious GradStar Top 500 for 2025. This recognition marks a significant milestone for the students and for the university, which continues to nurture graduates who embody resilience, innovation, and leadership.
The GradStar Awards, now in its 10th year, celebrate the brightest young minds in the country, students and graduates who show the potential to make a real difference in their communities and industries. With more than 7,000 entries received from over 25 tertiary institutions, the competition is a showcase of the country’s future leaders. From this massive pool of candidates, only 500 have been selected, and UNIVEN is proud to have three representatives among them.
Prudence Hlungwane, a Bachelor of Laws graduate, who has demonstrated sharp analytical skills and a strong passion for justice.
Puseletso Masiah, a Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences graduate, who has shown unwavering commitment to addressing some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.
Dipoo Mashifane, who recently obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Agriculture, with a thesis titled “Characterisation and potential for the genetic improvement of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) landraces.”
Their inclusion in the Top 500 is no small feat. The selection process requires more than academic achievement; it tests qualities such as adaptability, leadership without authority, cultural intelligence, problem-solving, and the ability to thrive in ambiguity. These are the very skills employers seek in a fast-changing world, and the GradStar programme provides a vital platform for bridging the gap between academia and industry.
For Prudence, Puseletso, and Dipoo, this recognition is the beginning of a challenging yet exciting journey. They will now progress to the next phase of the GradStar Awards, where a series of assessments will determine the Top 100 students nationally. The finalists will be unveiled during a live webinar later this year, followed by a prestigious in-person celebration at the Indaba Hotel in Johannesburg in December 2025.
Reflecting on the calibre of this year’s cohort, Laura Barker, founder of the GradStar Programme, remarked:
“South Africa’s future is being shaped by a new generation of trailblasers, students who are rising above the challenges of today to lead with vision, courage, and purpose. In a world marked by uncertainty and change, these individuals stand out not only for their academic excellence but for their drive to make a meaningful difference.”
UNIVEN’s achievement in placing three students in the Top 500 is a proud moment for the institution. It underscores the university’s commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically capable but also socially conscious and ready to contribute to national and global development.
As the world continues to grapple with complex challenges from climate change and food insecurity to social justice and economic transformation, graduates like Prudence, Puseletso, and Dipoo represent the hope of a brighter, more sustainable future. Their journeys are a testament to the transformative power of education and the spirit of determination that defines the University of Venda.
In December, as South Africa celebrates the GradStar Top 100, UNIVEN will be watching closely, cheering on its three shining stars as they continue to demonstrate what it means to rise above, inspire others, and redefine success.
In congratulating the rising stars, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Bernard Nthambeleni, remarked, “UNIVEN celebrates this achievement with pride, confident that these young leaders will continue to inspire their peers and communities while bridging the gap between academia and industry.”
