The Department of Marketing, Branding and Communication is pleased to announce the appointment of Vusani Rathogwa as Social Media Officer, effective 01 April 2026. A dynamic and creative communications professional, Vusani brings a powerful blend of technical expertise and storytelling ability that is set to elevate the department’s digital presence and audience engagement.
A proud alumnus of the University of Venda, where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Media Studies, Vusani has built an impressive career as a cinematographer, creative director, and offline editor. His multidisciplinary skill set spans social media management, digital communication, and event coverage, making him exceptionally well positioned to drive impactful, innovative
communication strategies.

Vusani’s professional journey reflects a strong commitment to meaningful storytelling and institutional visibility. His experience includes working with the South African Broadcasting Corporation, where he contributed as a cinematographer on documentary productions such as Vhavenda Heritage, Women Empowerment, and gender-based violence awareness programmes for Phalaphala FM. These projects highlight not only his technical capabilities but also his passion for socially relevant narratives.
He has also played a role in high-level media production, contributing to the BRICS Parliamentary Forum in collaboration with Milestone Studios and Parliament TV. Through this work, he supported the coverage of significant parliamentary engagements, strengthening public communication and access to information.

Beyond this, Vusani has collaborated with organisations such as the Universal Greening Organisation, contributing to projects with leading institutions including Old Mutual and Nedbank. His work has focused on visual storytelling and digital content that amplifies social impact initiatives, demonstrating his ability to connect audiences with purpose-driven narratives. His portfolio further reflects involvement in regional and international initiatives, including the South Africa–Botswana Fellowship Programme, as well as community-focused projects supported by Boxer Superstores and the Green Development Foundation.

Welcoming the appointment, the Director of Marketing, Branding and Communication Dr Takalani Dzaga, said, “We are delighted to welcome Mr Rathogwa to the team. His creativity, technical expertise, and strong understanding of digital storytelling will significantly strengthen our communication efforts. We are confident that he will play a key role in enhancing our institutional visibility and engagement with both internal and external stakeholders.”

The Director further encouraged staff and students to actively collaborate with Mr Rathogwa, adding, “We encourage all staff and students to work closely with Mr Rathogwa in sharing their stories, achievements, and initiatives. Through collaboration, we can collectively amplify the University’s voice and showcase the impactful work taking place across our institution.”
With a proven track record in creative media and digital communication, Vusani is poised to enhance UNIVENs online visibility, strengthen stakeholder engagement, and bring fresh, innovative approaches to social media. His appointment marks an exciting step forward in advancing the department’s mission to communicate with impact, authenticity, and relevance.
