The University of Venda (UNIVEN) has welcomed the appointment of Dr Bumani Solomon Manganye, Senior Lecturer and Postgraduate Coordinator in the Department of Public Health within the Faculty of Health Sciences, as a Board Member of Malamulele Hospital.
Dr Manganye has been appointed in the capacity of Higher Education and Training Expert and will serve a three-year term. His appointment is expected to bring valuable expertise in academia, research, leadership and community engagement to the hospital’s governance structures.
A respected public health scholar, Dr Manganye’s inclusion on the board is poised to enhance institutional oversight, strengthen strategic decision-making and contribute to improved healthcare service delivery. His evidence-based approach and extensive experience in stakeholder engagement are expected to support stronger collaboration between the hospital and the communities it serves.
The appointment also presents significant opportunities for the University of Venda. By strengthening ties between the institution and the healthcare sector, it opens new avenues for collaborative research, community-focused health initiatives and knowledge exchange. Students are set to benefit from increased access to practical learning opportunities and research projects that address real-world community health challenges.
Furthermore, Dr Manganye’s role is expected to foster stronger partnerships with external stakeholders, including traditional leaders, faith-based organisations and traditional healers. Such collaborations could pave the way for additional memoranda of understanding and create expanded platforms for student training, experiential learning and community engagement. His appointment underscores the University of Venda’s commitment to advancing regional healthcare development and improving community well-being. It also reflects the institution’s strategic focus on meaningful community engagement as outlined in its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan and Vision 2040, “A Beacon of Hope for Societal Change.” Through this appointment, UNIVEN continues to demonstrate its growing influence in shaping solutions that bridge higher education, research and community development for lasting societal impact.
Congratulating Dr Manganye on his appointment, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Venda, Professor Bernard Nthambeleni, described the appointment as a testament to his professional excellence and commitment to community development. “Dr Manganye’s appointment is a proud achievement for both him and the University. It reflects the calibre of expertise within our institution and the important role our academics play in contributing to society beyond the classroom. We are confident that his knowledge, leadership and dedication to public health will add significant value to the governance and strategic direction of Malamulele Hospital. This appointment further strengthens the University’s commitment to community engagement and to making a meaningful impact on the lives of the people we serve,” said Prof Nthambeleni.
