Oliver Tambo Institute of Governance and Policy Studies

Faculty of Management, Commerce and Law

Overview

The OR Tambo Institute of Governance and Policy Studies was established in 1999 as a constituent unit of the School of Business, Economics and Administrative Sciences which later became the School of Management Sciences (SMS) and eventually the Faculty of Management, Commerce and Law (FMCL) since April 2021. Its establishment was motivated by the then Northern (now Limpopo) Provincial Government’s desire for local tertiary institutions to train public servants for the government and to conduct research on policy matters for necessary interventions through offering a course work master programme and short courses in public management. The establishment coincided with the similar approach to all other Universities where in postgraduate units were established to cater for a course work tutored master’s degrees in public management and administration as well as offering short term courses. The institute offers three course work Masters Degrees, namely, Master of Public Management (MPM), Master of Municipal Management (MMM) and Master of Development Management (MDM).

The institute is currently in the hands of capable seasoned academic staff being Prof Nghamula Nkuna (Nghamula.nkuna@univen.ac.za) and Dr Lufuno Kone (Lufuno.kone@univen.ac.za).

The purpose/mandate of the Institute is to fulfil the following strategic areas:

• To train public servants in general within specific areas to governance and policy making
• To offer tutored master’s programme in Public Management, Municipal Management and Development Management
• Promote PhD in Public Management
• To undertake and conduct research on governance and public policy matters and recommend interventions.
• To offer and conduct short courses in public management within the public service and the public sector in general
• Identify, offer and conduct short courses in public management within the public service and the public sector in general and link with other institutes
